FORT LEE, VA - Fayetteville State is another clash with golf rival Virginia State for the CIAA Championship title. The Trojans hold a three stroke lead after the first round at the Cardinal Golf Course in Fort Lee, VA. Freshman Jedidiah Frazier shares the top spot of the leader board with three other golfers. The Broncos have a combined score of 309, 21 over par.
Jedidiah Frazier (Havelock, NC) shot a 74 (two-over) along with Brian Wood of Virginia State, Kenneth Bethea of Livingstone and Derek Johnson of St. Augustine's. Jeremy Ringled and Matt Crescenzo are tied at 78, just four positions from the lead. Bryan Connor and William McClure are also knotted together with the same score of seven-over.
Chowan (329, +41) and Virginia Union (330, +42) finished third and fourth respectively while Elizabeth City State is close behind with a 45-over, 333. St. Augustine's is also in the mix after shooting a 51-over, 339.
Livingstone finished the opening round in the seventh position after shooting an 80-over, 368. Johnson C. Smith came in eighth with a 101-over, 389 while St. Paul's rounded out the team field with a 163-over, 451.
After the top four individuals, there are also 14 other golfers who are within five shots of the overall lead. Gregory Hunt and Stuart Larus of Virginia State sit one shot and two shots behind respectively while Corey Garvey of Chowan is also only two shots behind.
The second and final round of the 2010 CIAA Golf Championships will commence on Friday at 8 a.m. with the top four teams (VSU, FSU, CU and VUU) teeing off in the opening group. St. Augustine's, Elizabeth City and Livingstone will start in the second group at 8:50 while Johnson C. Smith, St. Paul's and the top five individual golfers will be in the final group at 9:40.
