Final Stats
Blaine, Wash. - The Fayetteville State Men's Golf team put an exclamation point behind the "Best Season Ever!" The Broncos finished the 2009 season as one of the top 20 teams in NCAA Division II. FSU shot a 106 over par 1242, for 17th place, during the four-round NCAA National Tournament. Senior Derek Scott (Hope Mills, NC) finished within the top 50 with a total score of 303 (+19); tied at 47th. Twenty teams and 108 individuals participated in the event hosted by Western Washington University at the Loomis Trail Golf Club in Blaine, WA.
Scott (who was the Low Medalist winner at the CIAA Championships) shot 74, 82, 72, and 75 to lead the team. Kevin Lyles and Joel Lynn both tied for 76th with 311 (+27). Lyles, a senior from Charlotte, NC, put up 78, 80, 79, and 74 on the leaderboard. Lynn is a junior from Sanford, NC. He had scores of 79, 80, 78, and 74. Jeremy Ringled (Junior - Hope Mills, NC) finished in the tied position of 90th. His scores of 80, 77, 79 and 81 landed him +33 (317). William McClure (Junior - Fayetteville, NC) finished 106th with a 358 score (+74). His strokes did not count towards the team's final score. McClure had rounds of 84, 95, 91, and 88.
Four rounds were not enough to determine the champions at the NCAA Division II National Men's Golf Championships. Both the team and individual titles were decided by playoffs, with Sonoma State claiming the team championship over Cal State San Bernardino and Gavin Smith of Indiana, Penn., winning the individual title over Kelbi Lee of Ferris State.
Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino each finished with a four-round score of 43-over 1179. Columbus State was third at 46-over 1182, with 2007 champion Barry University fourth in the 20-team field at 47-over 1183. The Seawolves claimed their first national championship by getting four pars and a bogey in the sudden-death playoff on the 18th hole. Cal State San Bernardino had three pars and two bogeys.
