Jacksonville, NC - Fayetteville State finished eighth with a 16 over par score in the 38th Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Championship Tournament. The three-day tournament was held at the Paradise Point Golf Course on the Camp LeJeune Base. As weather threatened the entire tournament, the Broncos dropped from third place following the first round to fifth place after the second. Joel Lynn finished in the top 25 with a bogey (+1) score. He tied with ten others for 12th place. Methodist won the tournament for the second year in a row with a 14 under par score.
Thirty-six teams of five golfers each were broken down into two groups. On the first day of play, one group of 16 teams played the Scarlet Course (Par 70 - 5,951 yards) while the other half played the Gold Course (Par 72 - 7,040 yards). The groups switched courses for the second round and the top 16 teams played the Gold course for the championship title. The bottom 16 played on the Scarlet Course for the consolation title.
Fayetteville State finished day-1 tied for third with Johnson & Wales with 273 strokes. On the par 70 course, four of the five Broncos had 70 strokes or less. Jeremy Ringled (junior - Hope Mills, NC) finished the round at par, while Derek Scott (senior - Hope Mills, NC) finished one better at -1. Joel Lynn (junior - Sanford, NC) and Kevin Lyles (junior - Charlotte, NC) finished -4 and -3 respectfully.
The Broncos finished with an even score (568) after the second round. FSU sat in the fifth position along with Guilford College of Greensboro. The team had a total of 295 strokes on the par 72 course. Joel Lynn was one under par for the round. Scott and Ringled were two over while Lyles was four over.
After the final day of play, the Broncos found themselves with 16 strokes over even (872). Kevin Lyles shot a 74 to lead the team on the Gold Course. He finished the tournament tied for 26th with a +4. Derek Scott also had a +4 score for the 26th position. Jeremy Ringled had a +7 score for the tournament.
Fayetteville State will play close to home next weekend (April 4th - 5th) when the Broncos participate in the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate Tournament. The Tournament will be hosted by UNC Pembroke at the Carolina Sands at White Lake golf course in Elizabethtown, NC.
