Pacers top Broncos 3-0 in Tournament of Champions
Wingate, N.C.- The Pacers of USC Aiken defeated the Fayetteville State Broncos 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-11) in day one of the 2008 Wingate Tournament of Champions Friday night in Cuddy Arena. USC Aiken improves to 5-1 on the year, FSU falls to 2-4.
Freshman middle hitter Susan MacClary (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the USC Aiken attack with 10 kills while hitting .833 for the match. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Disney (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 10 kills and eight digs for the Pacers. Junior setter Lauren Cedeno (Jacksonville, Fla.) handed out 18 assists while senior Stefanie Durham (Easley, S.C.) racked up 10 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson (Laurel Hill, N.C.) led the Fayetteville State attack with seven kills while hitting .500 for the match. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Meeks (Laurinburg, N.C.) added six kills for the Broncos. Sophomore setter Achari Mainor (Antioch, Calif.) handed out 19 assists while junior libero Cailee Huffman (Thatcher, Ariz.) collected a match-high 12 digs.
The Pacers took a 13-6 lead in the first set on a service ace from Disney. Back-to-back kills from MacClary stretched the lead to 10 at 18-8. The Broncos would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
USC Aiken took a 10-6 lead in the second set on a kill from Disney. The Broncos cut the lead to one on back-to-back kills from Jefferson to make it 12-11. The Pacers responded by stretching the lead back to five at 19-14 on a kill from MacClary. Fayetteville State would get no closer than four the rest of the set.
The Pacers jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the third frame on a kill from MacClary. Two kills from sophomore outside hitter Ali Sfara (Boardman, Ohio) made it 21-10. The lead would not get down to single digits the rest of the way.
USC Aiken hit .398 for the match, collecting 43 kills on 88 attacks while committing only eight errors. Fayetteville State hit .058, with 23 kills and 18 errors on 86 attacks. The Pacers racked up seven aces on the evening, while also racking up five blocks. The Broncos had two blocks and an ace.
Both teams are back in action Saturday on day two of the Tournament of Champions. Fayetteville State takes on Wingate at 10 a.m. The Pacers take on Lees-McRae at 12 p.m. Fayetteville State battles Lees-McRae at 3 p.m. USC Aiken returns to the court at 5 p.m. to take on Wingate.
