LADY BRONCOS START SEASON WITH WIN OVER QUEENS COLLEGE

Hickory, NC - The Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos opened its 2007 volleyball season by defeating Queens (NC) College at the Lenoir-Rhyne College/Moretz Sports Invitational Volleyball Tournament in five games (30-27, 19-30, 30-22, 14-30, 15-13). Leading the Lady Broncos in their first win of the season were senior, Cassandra Peterson with 14 kills and five total blocks; freshman, Samantha Meeks with six kills, seven assists and 14 digs; and freshman, Achari Mainor with 24 assists and 14 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Lady Broncos stumbled, falling to Pfeiffer University in three games (30-25, 30-14, 30-18).

FSU returned to action Saturday, morning against Texas A&M-Kingsville and dropped three games (30-7, 30-18, 30-19) with Samantha Meeks, Brittany Gadson and Cassandra Peterson trying to keep the Lady Broncos from going down. Meeks had five kills and five digs, Gadson had 10 digs and Peterson finished with three kills.

In the final match of the tournament, the Lady Broncos dropped a hard fought four game match to Belmont-Abbey College (30-27, 28-30, 10-30, 26, 30). Freshman Achari Mainor had 36 assists and 14 digs, Sha' Quana Veney had 15 digs and Samantha Meeks had 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Lady Broncos attacked. The loss dropped FSU to 1-3 overall. Coach Elorine Hill was pleased with the team play. "We are playing all our players with a variety of lineups," said Hill. "We will need to raise our level one more step if we are going to reach our goals."
