Fayetteville State University is the home of the Division II PGA National Minority Collegiate champions; the Broncos' captured their second consecutive championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This is the fourth national title won by Coach Raymond McDougal and the Broncos. Fayetteville State previous titles came in 1995, 1996, and 2006. In winning the 2007 championship, the Broncos' golfers established a new tournament record with a 582 score, erasing the old mark set by Johnson and Wales University in 2003. The 582 score surpassed all scores at the 2007 event.
Derek Scott, a sophomore from Hope Mills, North Carolina, became the third consecutive Broncos to win the individual medalist honors. The previous Fayetteville State University's winners were John Azzarelli, 2005 and Ian Milne, 2006. They also captured second place in the tournament for three years running. Ian Milne was second in 2005; Derek Scott in 2006 and Joel Lynn finished one stroke ahead of his teammate this year.
Winning isn't new for the Broncos golfers. They won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Golf Championship this year, outdistancing their closest opponent by 37 strokes. The championship was the seventh consecutive for Coach McDougal and the Broncos. Since becoming a varsity sport in 1970, Fayetteville State University has won 23 CIAA Golf Championship. Since taking over the program in 1993, McDougal has won 13 of 23 championships. For his effort, he has been named the conference Coach of the Year 11-times.
Academically, Fayetteville State University's golfers excel in the classroom as well as on the playing green. Two members of the team (Derek Scott and Brandon Smith) were named to Diverse Issues in Higher Education (formerly Black Issues in Higher Education) Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Team. The team honors student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in the athletic area. Three members of the team were named to either the Chancellor's List or Dean's List for the sprig semester and three graduated at the 140th Spring Commencement Exercise.
