Lashaunda Spurgeon joins the Fayetteville State volleyball staff as an assistant coach after serving five years at Vernon College. While at Vernon, Spurgeon was the Head Volleyball coach for two seasons and assistant for three.
In 2017, Spurgeon was promoted to head volleyball coach at Vernon College after serving as an assistant since 2014. In her first season as head coach, VC finished the regular season 16-13 overall and 5-4 in conference play and qualified for the regional tournament and placing fourth overall. Two of her players were honored on the All-Conference Second-Team and one on the First-Team. One student-athlete made the Regional All-Tournament Team as well as the All-Region Academic Team. In 2018, her squad finished the season 14-16 with one student-athlete on the All-Conference First Team and three on the Second-Team.
As the assistant coach at Vernon, the volleyball squad had three successful seasons and had the opportunity to train a NJCAA All-American. Spurgeon guided six players to earn First-Team and five Second-Team All-Conference honors. Six athletes were garnered Academic All-Conference, two were named to the All-Region Tournament Team, one as the conference MVP, Newcomer of the Year, Setter of the Year, and two Defensive Players of the Year.
In 2013, after graduation, Lashaunda was the JV head volleyball coach and assistant varsity coach at Hillcrest High School.
The 2013 graduate of Stillman College has a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. She was a four-year volleyball and track & field student-athlete. She was among the top five in service aces, kills, and blocks on the volleyball court and received the leadership and most offensive award her final three seasons as a Tiger. Lashaunda finished her last season ranked second in the NCAA DII nation for service aces. In 2011 and 2012, Spurgeon was the SIAC women's javelin champion and 2013 runner-up. While a member of the track team, she received SIAC Women's First Team All-Conference in 2012 and Second Team in 2011 and 2013. She was also named the Most Outstanding Student-Athlete for women's track for the 2012-13 season.
Lashaunda Spurgeon is a native of Albertville, Alabama and a former standout in volleyball, basketball, and track & field at Albertville High School with numerous awards such as All-Area, All-County, and state qualifier honors.
