Junior middle hitter and blocker Aolani Cannon brings energy, athleticism, and a fearless competitive spirit to the Fayetteville State volleyball program. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Cannon transferred from Trinity Christian College, where she excelled as both a volleyball and track & field student-athlete.
Prior to arriving at Fayetteville State, Cannon enjoyed a successful athletic career at Lawrence North High School, earning All-MIC honors and helping her team capture county championships in track & field. At Trinity Christian College, she continued to distinguish herself both on and off the court, earning Female Freshman of the Year honors while excelling in multiple track events. Cannon earned All-CCAC recognition as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team, qualified for the NCCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 4x100-meter relay, and scored points in both the 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay at the CCAC Indoor Championships.
Cannon chose Fayetteville State because of the culture, community, and family atmosphere she experienced during her visit.
"Coach Chyna and Coach Harris really made me feel like this is a home. Coming from a large family and being so far away from them can be difficult, but the community here makes it easier."
What makes Fayetteville State special to Cannon is the excitement she feels every time she steps into Capel Arena and the genuine support she receives from coaches, faculty, teammates, and fans.
"I love the supportive environment, and everyone genuinely cares about you when it comes to academics and athletics."
Known for her confidence and enthusiasm, Cannon approaches competition with a unique blend of preparation and excitement. Before matches, she listens to music, dances, tapes her fingers, and writes the names of family members on them as a reminder of the support system behind her. She also takes time to focus on her goals, visualize success, and enter every match believing in her abilities regardless of the opponent.
One of Cannon's defining characteristics is her determination to overcome expectations. Despite being considered undersized for a middle blocker, she has never shied away from the challenge.
"I've been overlooked because of my size, but I've never switched my position. I like feeling underestimated because I love showing people what I can do."
Her competitive fire is fueled by opportunities to face talented opponents and prove herself against bigger players at the net. Rather than being intimidated, Cannon welcomes the challenge and uses it as motivation to elevate her game.
Off the court, Cannon enjoys baking, cooking, dancing, spending time with friends, and trying new experiences. Her passion for baking has grown into an entrepreneurial venture, and she hopes to continue expanding her business while pursuing culinary school after graduation. Her long-term goal is to combine her love for business and culinary arts into a thriving career.
Cannon credits her siblings as her biggest athletic influences. Growing up in a competitive and supportive family environment taught her the value of hard work, accountability, and encouragement.
"We push each other in all of our sports, and we support each other. They inspire me to be my best every day."
Among her favorite volleyball memories are the opportunities she has had to play in the back row as a middle blocker, showcasing her versatility and love for passing. She also thrives in electric atmospheres where passionate crowds bring extra energy to the competition.
At Fayetteville State, Cannon has found a place where she can compete, grow, and be unapologetically herself. She continues to develop as a student-athlete while helping the Broncos pursue championship success.
