An integral and valuable member of Fayetteville State University Athletics, Tolbert Matthews enters his second season with the Broncos as Assistant Football Coach on the defensive side of the ball, coaching linebackers. Matthews brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of success from his previous coaching positions.

Tolbert Matthews began his coaching career with various roles in the Wake County Public Schools, contributing to multiple successful seasons. He then served as the Defensive Quality Control Analyst for Division 1 William & Mary Football, working directly with Defensive Coordinator Vincent Brown and Head Coach Mike London Sr. In addition to this role, Matthews was primarily an Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations and Compliance at William & Mary.

Prior to his tenure at William & Mary, Matthews served as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Virginia University of Lynchburg from 2018 to 2019. He also interned at North Carolina State University and Duke University in multiple positions within the athletic departments from 2014 to 2017. During his internships, Tolbert was a Physical Education teacher serving the Durham and Wake County Public School Systems.

A Norfolk, Virginia native, Tolbert was a four-sport athlete at Norview High School. He graduated from Elizabeth City State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and obtained his Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Liberty University.

Matthews and his wife Jasmine are the proud parents of their daughter, Journee Lee Matthews (4).
