Kienus Boulware enters the 2026 season as the Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Linebackers Coach at Fayetteville State University, bringing nearly three decades of collegiate coaching experience and one of the most accomplished defensive resumes in HBCU and Division II football. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier defensive minds, Boulware has built championship programs, coordinated historically elite defenses, and developed award-winning student-athletes at every stop of his career.
Across his coaching career, Boulware has been part of multiple national championships, conference championships, and division titles, including HBCU National Championships, CIAA Championships, and SWAC defensive dominance. His defenses have finished No. 1 nationally in multiple statistical categories at both the Division I (FCS) and Division II levels, including total defense, scoring defense, pass efficiency defense, turnovers forced, sacks, and tackles for loss.
Most recently, Boulware served as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Allen University and Alabama A&M University, where his 2023 defensive unit ranked first in the nation (FCS) in forced turnovers, forced fumbles, and interceptions, while also finishing among the national leaders in scoring and passing defense. His leadership helped produce numerous SWAC and national award winners, including multiple Defensive Players of the Year and All-Conference selections.
Boulware previously enjoyed a highly successful tenure as Head Football Coach at Winston-Salem State University (2014–19), compiling a 66 percent career winning percentage, winning two CIAA Championships, multiple division titles, and being recognized with Big House Gaines Coach of the Year honors. Prior to becoming head coach, he transformed WSSU into a national defensive power as Defensive Coordinator (2010–13), including an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game.
His earlier career includes championship-level success as Defensive Coordinator at Shaw University, as well as assistant coaching and administrative roles at North Carolina Central University and Livingstone College, where he also served as Assistant Athletics Director and helped manage the operational, compliance, recruiting, and budgetary functions of athletic departments.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Boulware earned his degree in Mass Communication and began his coaching career as a student assistant under College Football Hall of Fame coaches. He has since become an AFCA member, a national clinic presenter at NCAA Conventions and Glazier Clinics, and a published contributor to American Football Quarterly on defensive strategy and linebacker fundamentals.
Beyond the field, Boulware is actively involved in community outreach and leadership development and has been honored with multiple awards recognizing excellence, integrity, and service, including the Fritz Pollard Alliance / Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Excellence Award and induction into the Livingstone College and North Carolina Central University Halls of Fame.
As Associate Head Coach at Fayetteville State, Boulware provides strategic leadership across the program while overseeing all defensive operations and linebacker development. His presence brings championship experience, elite defensive innovation, and a proven blueprint for sustained success as the Broncos prepare for the 2026 season.
