Shaw Volleyball Outlasts Bowie State in Four-Set Thriller
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Shaw University rallied past Bowie State in a hard-fought four-set match (12-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-23) on Friday afternoon at Felton J. Capel Arena, improving to 5-10 overall and 2-1 in CIAA play.
After dropping the opening set, the Bears surged back behind MaKayla Brown’s dominant performance. Brown led all scorers with 18 kills, adding three service aces and nine digs for a match-high 21 points. Khamare Steppe chipped in 11 points with nine kills and two blocks, while setter Jakya Moore dished out 29 assists and contributed two blocks.
Shaw hit .152 as a team and held steady on defense with 68 digs and three total blocks. The Bears showed resilience in the final two sets, edging Bowie State by two points in each frame.
Bowie State (4-3, 2-1 CIAA) was led by Nina Edwards, who posted nine kills and three blocks, and Nicole Taylor, who added seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs hit .253 overall and recorded 10 team blocks, but struggled to maintain momentum after a dominant first set.
The match featured 19 tie scores and eight lead changes, with Shaw closing out the final set in dramatic fashion.
