Fayetteville, N.C. — The Fayetteville State University community mourns the passing of Peggy Green Ed.D., a revered educator, coach, administrator, and trailblazer whose influence shaped generations of Broncos both in the classroom and in competition.
Green's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Fayetteville State University. As an instructor, she dedicated her career to preparing future educators in health and physical education, embodying a commitment to academic excellence and student success that extended far beyond the classroom. Her passion for teaching and mentorship inspired countless students, many of whom followed in her footsteps as educators and leaders.
"Dr. Green's life exemplified the highest ideals of leadership in higher education," said Chancellor Darrell T. Allison. "Her vision and strategic guidance not only elevated Fayetteville State University but influenced many more colleges and universities by setting new standards for excellence in both academics and athletics. Dr. Green's legacy is defined not only by her extraordinary achievements but also by her ability to inspire those around her to pursue greatness. Therefore, her contributions will have a lasting impact on our university as well as the broader higher education community."
In athletics, Green's impact was transformative. She joined Fayetteville State in the mid-1980s as an instructor while also serving as head coach for women's volleyball and women's basketball, leading both programs during pivotal periods of growth. Her leadership, discipline, and vision helped establish a strong foundation for women's athletics at FSU, one that continues to thrive today.
Green later served as Fayetteville State's Senior Woman Administrator from 1989 to 2011, where she was a steadfast advocate for student-athletes and equity in collegiate sports. She played a critical role in elevating opportunities for women within athletics, not only on campus but across the CIAA and nationally. Her service extended to numerous NCAA committees, including the Division II Women's Basketball Committee, where she served as chair, further amplifying her influence on the national stage.
A pioneer in every sense, Green was the first woman from Fayetteville State to hold a national athletic office, and her lifelong advocacy opened doors for generations of women in sport. Her contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the CIAA Hall of Fame and receiving the prestigious NACWAA Lifetime Achievement Award—one of the highest honors for leaders in women's athletics.
Even after her administrative career, Green remained an active presence in the university community, continuing to champion both academics and athletics while shaping the next generation of teachers and leaders.
"Peggy Green was a trailblazer, mentor, and champion for everything Fayetteville State athletics represents," said Director of Athletics Anthony T. Bennett. "Her impact is immeasurable—not only in the success of our programs, but in the lives of the student-athletes, coaches, and administrators she guided along the way. She helped build the foundation we stand on today, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Broncos."
Green's enduring impact can still be felt across Fayetteville State athletics, where her name continues to be synonymous with excellence—as seen through honors such as the CIAA Women's Coach of the Year award bearing her name. Her legacy lives on through the countless student-athletes, colleagues, and alumni she guided, mentored, and inspired.
Fayetteville State University extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Green's family, friends, former student-athletes, and colleagues. Her legacy of leadership, service, and advocacy will forever remain a cornerstone of Bronco pride.
