FSU Names Frank Hyland Associate Head Coach of Cross Country and Track & Field

Frank HylandFayetteville State University Department of Athletics is proud to announce the appointment of Frank Hyland as the new Associate Head Coach of the Broncos Cross Country and Track & Field programs. Hyland brings with him a legacy of excellence, leadership, and championship pedigree that will elevate the Broncos to new heights.

Hyland joins FSU after a highly successful tenure at Virginia State University, where he led the Trojans to multiple CIAA titles, including two consecutive CIAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2023 and 2024 and the 2024 Men's CIAA Cross Country Championship. He was named the '23 and '24 CIAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year as well as '24 CIAA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, capping off a decorated coaching career that spans nearly three decades.

A native of Trinidad & Tobago, Hyland has amassed an extraordinary record of success, including:
  • 24 conference championship teams in the NAIA
  • 16 SIAC Conference Championship
  • 144 individual champions in track & field
  • 12 NCAA Division II All-Americans
  • Over 20 Coach of the Year honors across the CIAA, SIAC, and NCAA South Region
Hyland is also credited with developing the first NCAA Division II national triple jump champion in Benedict College's history and producing multiple USTFCCCA National Cross Country All-Americans.

"Coach Hyland's championship mindset, proven track record, and passion for developing student-athletes align perfectly with our vision for excellence. His presence will be a game-changer for our program."

Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett emphasized the strategic importance of Hyland's addition to the staff:

"At Fayetteville State, we are committed to building a championship-caliber coaching staff that not only continues our success in the CIAA but also positions the Broncos as a national contender. Coach Hyland's experience and winning culture are exactly what we need to elevate our program to the next level."

Coach Hyland expressed his excitement about joining the Broncos:

"It's an incredible honor to join Fayetteville State University, a program with a proud tradition and a championship culture. Under the leadership of Director Bennett, who has guided FSU to 28 CIAA Championships, the vision for excellence is clear. I'm excited to contribute to that legacy and help push the Broncos to national prominence."

Coach Turner, a decorated coach and former Olympian, will also oversee increased responsibilities across FSU's athletic programs. Her leadership as Senior Woman Administrator will further strengthen the department's commitment to equity, growth, and competitive success.

Hyland holds a Bachelor of Science from Barber-Scotia College and a Master of Science in Sport Management from Benedict College. He is a certified USATF Level 2 coach in Sprints, Hurdles, Relays, and Strength & Conditioning, and is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is married to Wendy Hyland and is the proud father of three children.
