Frank Hyland is a nationally recognized leader in collegiate cross country and track & field, bringing over 29 years of coaching and sports administration experience to his role as Associate Head Coach at Fayetteville State University. Known for building championship programs from the ground up, Hyland is a master recruiter, program architect, and mentor to elite student-athletes.

A native of Trinidad & Tobago, Hyland has coached at every level of collegiate athletics, including NAIA, NCAA Division II, and the CIAA and SIAC conferences. His coaching philosophy is rooted in discipline, accountability, and results, captured in his personal motto:

“You’ve got to do what you have to do, to do what you want to do! And there should be no excuses, just results.”

Career Highlights:
• 24 NAIA conference championship teams at Voorhees College (1997–2004)
• 144 individual champions in men’s and women’s track & field
• 21 NCAA Division II All-Americans (12 women, 10 men)
• 16 NAIA All-Americans
• 3 NCAA South Regional Cross Country Champions (2007, 2014, 2019)
• 2 USTFCCCA National Cross Country All-Americans (2019)

Hyland has earned over 25 Coach of the Year awards, including:
• Multiple NCAA South Region Coach of the Year honors (2012–2015, 2022)
• SIAC Coach of the Year in Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field (2008–2022)
• CIAA Coach of the Year (2023, 2024)

Program Builder:
At Voorhees College and Benedict College, Hyland built programs from scratch—establishing recruiting pipelines, policies, and training systems that emphasized character, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. He was the first SIAC coach to defeat Morehouse College in men’s cross country and has developed numerous firsts for his programs, including:
• First NCAA Division II National Champion at Benedict College
• First USTFCCCA National Cross Country All-Americans at Benedict College: Mathew Chesum and Stella Kiptui
•  NCAA All-Americans at VIRGINIA STATE(Markus White, Jahaz Morgan, and Joseph Briscoe)

Hyland is a devoted husband to Wendy Hyland and proud father of three. His presence at Fayetteville State marks a new era of excellence for the Broncos, as he joins a program with a proud tradition and a clear vision for national prominence.
