Richmond, VA -- The Fayetteville State men's basketball team triumphed over Virginia Union with a 68-61 victory on the road Monday. This win improved the Broncos' record to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in the CIAA, while the Panthers fell to 11-12 overall and 5-6 in the CIAA.
Caleb Simmons was the standout performer for Fayetteville State, scoring 24 points to lead the team. Tairell Fletcher also made significant contributions with 16 points and five assists, while Anthony Latty added five points, six rebounds, and two steals off the bench. The Broncos excelled in ball handling, recording 11 assists and only five turnovers, with Myles Pierre leading the team with five assists.
Defensively, Fayetteville State was formidable, forcing 14 turnovers from Virginia Union and converting those into 18 points. Latty's two steals were crucial in the Broncos' defensive efforts.
The game began with Virginia Union taking an early lead, but Fayetteville State responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Isaiah Ray, to take a 29-25 lead. The Broncos maintained a slim 29-27 advantage at halftime, thanks to their fast-break points.
In the second half, Virginia Union surged ahead to a 47-41 lead, but Fayetteville State answered with another 7-0 run to reclaim a 48-47 lead. The Broncos continued to build on this momentum, ultimately securing the 68-61 victory. Fayetteville State capitalized on Virginia Union's turnovers, scoring 11 points off five turnovers in the final period.
For Virginia Union, Dalyaun Mitchell led the team with 21 points, including three three-pointers, and Malachi Dark added 13 points and five rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Panthers were unable to overcome Fayetteville State's strong defensive play and efficient offense.
