CE GAINES CENTER, Winston-Salem, NC -- The Fayetteville State Broncos (12-6, 5-3 CIAA) secured an impressive 80-65 victory over the Winston-Salem State Rams (2-12, 0-5 CIAA) on the road. Tairell Fletcher led the Broncos with 21 points, while Caleb Simmons recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Javon Floyd also made a significant impact with three points and seven blocks.
The Broncos were on fire from beyond the arc, hitting 14 three-pointers on 29 attempts. Ezekiel Cannedy contributed five of those treys. Fayetteville State's defense was formidable, disrupting Winston-Salem's shots and tallying eight blocks, with Floyd leading the way with seven rejections.
After falling behind 8-4, Fayetteville State went on a 9-0 run with 15:18 left in the first half, culminating in a three-pointer from Cannedy, to take a 13-8 lead. The Broncos extended their lead to 40-33 by halftime, relying heavily on their three-point shooting, which accounted for 21 of their 40 first-half points.
In the second half, Fayetteville State continued to widen their lead, expanding it to 46-37 before going on a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Simmons, to push the lead to 53-37 with 14:57 remaining. The Rams managed to narrow the margin somewhat, but the Broncos maintained control and cruised to an 80-65 victory. Fayetteville State's three-point shooting remained strong in the second half, with seven more shots from deep contributing to their 40 second-half points.
The Broncos never trailed in the second half and forced 13 turnovers, showcasing their defensive prowess. Tairell Fletcher led the team with 21 points, and Caleb Simmons grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
