Elon, NC – Fayetteville State traveled to Elon University to open the 2024 cross-country season under the lights at the "Friday Night Lights Elon XC Opener".
FSU's men's cross country delivered a solid performance, securing fourth place with a total time of 1:39:55 and an average time of 19:59. Leading the charge was
Derrick Kipchumba, who finished 9th overall with a time of 18:55.4.
Hillary Toroitich followed, placing 20th with a time of 19:24.9.
Abel Mengich,
Nathan Kipyego, and
Donald Rotich rounded out the scoring for the Broncos, finishing 36th, 38th, and 55th respectively. Despite strong competition, Fayetteville State showcased its resilience and teamwork as the first division II to finish the field, making a commendable mark in the meet.
The Broncos' women's cross country team put forth a commendable effort, finishing sixth with a total time of 1:24:16 and an average time of 16:51. Leading the team was
Brenda Cheboi, who placed 32nd overall with a time of 15:28.4.
Nia Gibson followed, finishing 49th with a time of 16:26.8.
Ashley Bell,
Sierrah Matthews, and
Daisy Jerop rounded out the scoring for the Broncos, placing 55th, 61st, and 65th respectively. Despite facing tough competition, Fayetteville State's women demonstrated determination and teamwork throughout the race.
Fayetteville State will compete in Misenheimer, NC next Saturday in the Pfeiffer Invitational.
