The City of Rocky Mount (NC) press conference on Tuesday, August 6 marked the official announcement that Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and Fayetteville State University (FSU) will be competing in the 27th annual Down East Viking Football Classic (DEVFC) on September 21 at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
"It's a family affair!"
FSU Director of Athletics Todd Bennett pointed out during the press conference.
"It's a great event. We have family members who either attended Fayetteville State in this region or Elizabeth City State. You have that rivalry going on, but it is a family affair too when we attend the Down East [Viking Football] Classic."
Ancillary events such as a golf tournament and other family-friendly events throughout the weekend will lead to the climactic rivalry between the CIAA institutions. Game tickets are currently on sale for $25, and tailgating packages will be available for purchase soon through the city of Rocky Mount.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at
www.fsubroncos.com/devfc. Kickoff is slated for 2 pm.
The historic Rocky Mount signature event has provided an HBCU experience to the area since 1998. The first Classic was between the Vikings and the Broncos, with Fayetteville State claiming a 10-7 victory. FSU has participated in ten Down East Viking Football Classics at the Sports Complex and holds a 7-3 advantage. In 2021, Fayetteville State defeated the Vikings 47-6 in front of 6,300 fans.
Fayetteville State was predicted to finish third in the CIAA by the Football Coaches Association with 62 players returning to the roster. Head Coach Richard Hayes has led the Broncos to a 49-25 overall and 41-8 conference record over eight seasons. FSU has achieved six championship game berths with its last title in 2022.
"This will be my fifth appearance here [DEVFC]," added Coach Hayes. "We look forward to a great game!"
Elizabeth City State was predicted to finish tenth under third-year Head Coach Marcus Hilliard. Coach Hilliard has the unique experience of playing in the DEVFC for ECSU and coaching in the classic. His wife is an alumna of Fayetteville State University.
"It is like family, and I have to ask her, whose side she is on?"
"Fayetteville has been a staple in the conference, but we ain't backing down. We are coming here to show that Viking Pride!"
