Defensive effort leads Fayetteville State over Shaw 59-44

RALEIGH, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team kept Shaw to just 15 percent from deep in a 3-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 59-44 win over the Bears on the road Tuesday.

The Broncos (19-2, 12-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 16 points, five assists and five steals. Talia Trotter added 13 points, four assists and three steals and Keayna McLaughlin added nine points, six rebounds and five steals.

The Bears (11-11, 6-7) were led by Alexis Radcliff who scored 17 points along with 9 rebounds.

Led by Morgan Graham's four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 19 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 26 Shaw turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the other end of the floor. McLaughlin's five steals led the way individually for the Broncos.

How It Happened

Fayetteville State started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Amina Miles, to take an early lead with 7:34 left in the first quarter. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-10 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.

Fayetteville State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 49 seconds mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Trotter, to increase its lead to 32-20, a score that would hold until halftime. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 15 points close to the basket.

Fayetteville State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Daziyahna Wilson, to expand its lead further to 42-32 with 1:06 to go in the third. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 43-33 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 11 points in the paint.

Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Nyah Wilkins' jumper, to grow the lead to 57-42 with 58 seconds to go in the contest. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 59-44 win. Fayetteville State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
