Defensive effort leads Fayetteville State over Livingstone 75-50

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team held Livingstone to just 15.4 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-13 shooting performance on the way to a 75-50 victory against the Blue Bears at home Saturday.

The Broncos (15-11, 10-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Caleb Simmons, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Tairell Fletcher tacked on 14 points and five assists and Kaleb Coleman helped out with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Bears (12-13, 8-8) were led by Detionne Leach who scored 13 points along with 7 rebounds. 

Fayetteville State out-rebounded Livingstone 35-29 in Saturday's game, led by Coleman's nine boards.

Fayetteville State forced 16 Livingstone turnovers. The Broncos turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Coleman's one steal led the way for Fayetteville State.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 25-22 advantage, Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run with 1:58 left in the first half to increase its lead to 31-22. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 31-23 advantage. Fayetteville State capitalized on 11 Livingstone turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Fayetteville State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 65-50 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Cedric Currie's three, to grow the lead to 75-50 with 22 seconds to go in the contest, The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 75-50 win. Fayetteville State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting nine shots from deep to score 27 of its 44 points.
