COLUMBIA, SC --Fayetteville State women's basketball secured a decisive 70-57 victory over Benedict at the HRC Arena in Columbia, SC. The Broncos improved their record to 5-4 overall, while Benedict fell to 2-3.
Fayetteville State started strong, putting together a 16-14 lead heading into the second quarter. Fayetteville State did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.
Fayetteville State kept its first-quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 9:52 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kanyah O'Neal, to increase its lead to 25-14. The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Broncos still enjoyed a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime. Fayetteville State forced six Benedict turnovers in the period and turned them into nine points.
Following intermission, Fayetteville State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 37-32 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Talia Trotter, to expand its lead further to 43-32 with 2:25 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Broncos still entered the fourth quarter with a 43-39 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.
Fayetteville State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 55-49 before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 64-49 with 3:12 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-57 win. Fayetteville State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 12 of its 27 total points.
KaNyah O'Neal led all scorers with 15 points, shooting 7-of-9 from the field. Keayna McLaughlin and Nyah Wilkins each scored 14 points, and Talia Trotter scored a dozen.
FSU shot 44.3% from the field and was strong at the line, shooting 82.4%. The Broncos grabbed 30 rebounds, dished out 8 assists, and recorded 10 steals.
Benedict's Taylor Christmas led the Tigers with 14 points and seven boards, while Raven Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds.
Despite Benedict's efforts, Fayetteville State capitalized on the Tiger's 28 turnovers with 24 points off turnovers and 15 fast-break points.
The Broncos will open conference play on Tuesday, December 17 in Capel Arena against Elizabeth City State at 5:30 pm. The double-header, with the men's game following at 7:30 pm, has been designated a "Community Game" with FREE admission.
