Fayetteville State Shows Strong Defensive Effort in Close 77-71 Exhibition Game Against UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team kept UNC Wilmington to just 10.5 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-19 shooting performance, but fell 77-71 in the exhibition game against the Seahawks on the road Wednesday.

The Broncos had four players score in double figures, led by Ezekiel Cannedy, who had 20 points. Caleb Simmons added 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals and Myles Pierre helped out with 15 points off the bench.

Led by Simmons' four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 22-20, Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run with 5:31 left in the first half to take a 26-22 lead. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-31 advantage. Fayetteville State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 34 points.

UNC Wilmington proceeded to take a 62-52 lead before Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Cannedy's three, to shrink the deficit to 62-58 with 5:11 to go in the contest Another jumper by Cannedy pulled the Broncos within three, 69-66, with 3:15 left in the game. UNC Wilmington responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 77-71.
