SALISBURY, NC --Talia Trotter and Aniylah Bryant combined to score 45 total points - 67.2 percent of Fayetteville State's points - in the Broncos 67-58 victory against the Livingstone Blue Bears on the road Thursday.
The Broncos (15-2 Overall, 8-1 CIAA, 2-1 Division) had two players score in double figures, led by Trotter, who had 27 points and eight rebounds. Bryant tacked on 18 points, four assists and five steals and Morgan Graham added seven points and four blocks.
Trotter pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Fayetteville State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into six second-chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense held Livingstone shooters to only 30 percent from the field, including 17.2 percent from three-point range.
The Blue Bears (4-9 Overall, 2-8 CIAA, 1-3 Div) were led by Jamiah Lane who scored 23 points.
How It Happened
Fayetteville State started the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Bryant, to take an early lead with 5:23 left in the first quarter. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-8 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 14 points close to the basket.
The Broncos maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 28-23 edge. Fayetteville State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 14 points.
Fayetteville State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Trotter, to expand its lead further to 35-23 with 6:57 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Blue Bears had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Broncos still entered the fourth quarter with a 45-39 edge. Fayetteville State scored four fast-break points in the quarter.
Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Trotter's jumper, to grow the lead to 50-41 with 7:06 to go in the contest. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 67-58 win. Fayetteville State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring seven fast break points.
