Broncos fall in 5-set match to Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State volleyball team fell to the Shaw Bears 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 25-14, 14-25, 13-15) Thursday at home at Felton J Capel Arena.

The loss dropped Fayetteville State's record to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in CIAA action.

Prior to the start of the match, FSU's setter Jaida Bynum was presented a commemorative 1,000-Assist Ball by the Department of Athletics and Volleyball Head Coach, Dr. Reeshemah Johnson. Bynum, a senior public health major, recorded her 1,000 career assist after three seasons with the Broncos. To date, she has 1,229 assists.

Today, A'Lexus Everett finished with 13 kills to lead the Broncos offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .367. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Jordan Johnson had 27 and Casandra Watson had 10. From the front row, Anjola Thomas contributed six blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Broncos opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-22. Fayetteville State never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Broncos took over the lead.

SET 2 | Fayetteville State then fell in the second set 25-14, evening things at a set each. The Broncos lost the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Fayetteville State then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Broncos took control of the set early when the score was 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-14. Fayetteville State ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, 11 points, to close out the set. The Fayetteville State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Fayetteville State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Shaw attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Fayetteville State couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Bears forced a fifth set with a 25-14 victory. The Broncos trailed by as many as 12 points as Shaw grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 and Fayetteville State wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up two times before the Bears took over.

SET 5 | Fayetteville State and Shaw went back and forth all game, trading wins in the first three sets until the Bears took sets four and five, including winning the fifth set 15-13, and the match. The Broncos fell in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team led by more than two points in the set.
