FSU Women Escapes Brayboy Madness in 60-59 win over Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench on the way to a 60-59 victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on the road Thursday despite the energy of JCSU's Brayboy Madness.

Morgan Graham led the Broncos (14-6, 10-2 CIAA, 5-1 Southern Division) with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Aniylah Bryant tacked on seven points, six assists and two steals and London Thompson chipped in as well with eight points and seven rebounds.

Johnson C. Smith dropped to 9-13 overall, 4-8 in the conference and 3-3 in divisional play. Najah Lane led the Golden Bulls with 14 points while Niamoni Bagley followed with nine. 

Led by Graham's four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

Fayetteville State's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 34.6 percent shooting from the field. The Broncos also limited Jill Harris to 2-of-12 shooting and eight points in the game.

How It Happened

Fayetteville State started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run to take an early lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter. The Broncos then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-8 advantage. Fayetteville State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

The Broncos used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 36-22 edge.

After intermission, Fayetteville State held on to its advantage and owned a 54-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After the midway point in the fourth quarter, Johnson C. Smith, with the help of Brayboy's energy, sparked a 14-1 behind a three pointer by Shaniya Jones with 5:15 left in the game. 

London Thompson made one of two free throws with a minute left in the game for a three-point lead (60-57). 

The Broncos' defense held on for the victory.
