Defensive effort leads Fayetteville State past Saint Augustine's 54-41

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team held Saint Augustine's to just 18.2 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 54-41 victory against the Falcons at home Saturday.

The Broncos (16-12, 11-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Tyler Foster, who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Cress Worthy tacked on 11 points, six rebounds and two steals and Kaleb Coleman helped out with 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks off the bench.

Saint Augustine's had (8-17, 5-12) two team leaders, Jaylen Richard who had seven points, and George Jones who had seven points and four rebounds.

Led by Coleman's four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.

Fayetteville State's defense held Saint Augustine's to only 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 35.3 percent from the field. The Falcons did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed six second chance points while Fayetteville State cleared 28 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-8, Fayetteville State went on a 13-0 run with 8:02 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Foster, to take a 21-13 lead. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 25-20 advantage. Fayetteville State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 25 points.

Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Khalil Ridges' jumper, to grow the lead to 46-36 with 4:18 to go in the contest. The Broncos kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 54-41 win. Fayetteville State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 29 points in the lane.
