Fayetteville State secures 67-63 win against Elizabeth City State on fourth-quarter comeback

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team fought back from a 50-49 deficit after the third quarter to defeat the Elizabeth City State Vikings 67-63 on the road Thursday.

The Broncos (7-1, 1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Talia Trotter, who had 20 points. Aniylah Bryant added 15 points and four steals and Nyah Wilkins helped out with 13 points and six rebounds. The Vikings (5-3, 0-1) also had three players finish in double digits. NyAsia Blango led the effort with 14 points, while Imani Sutton added a dozen and Asaya Bulgin chipped in ten.

Fayetteville State took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 15 assists on 23 made field goals. Individually, Daziyahna Wilson led the way for the Broncos with four assists and Tanjaneeka Eichelberger also contributed with three assists of her own.

Fayetteville State did a great job disrupting Elizabeth City State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Morgan Graham led the way individually for the Broncos with four rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-7, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run with 1:34 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Bryant, to narrow its deficit to 16-14, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.

Elizabeth City State kept adding to that lead, building a 31-28 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run to take a 33-31 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

Elizabeth City State then took a 48-42 lead following intermission before Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run to grab a 49-48 lead with nine seconds to go in the third. Elizabeth City State responded to seize a 50-49 lead entering the fourth quarter. Fayetteville State took advantage of six Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.

Elizabeth City State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-49 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Eichelberger's three, to seize a 56-52 lead with 7:42 to go in the contest. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 67-63 win. Fayetteville State took advantage of 10 Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of those takeaways.
