Foster scores 22 points in Fayetteville State's 72-62 win against Virginia State

PETERSBURG, VA --Tyler Foster scored 22 points to help lead the Fayetteville State men's basketball team past the Virginia State Trojans 72-62 on the road Thursday for the conference opener.

Foster added nine rebounds to his 22-point game to lead the Broncos (3-5, 1-0). Caleb Simmons helped out with 18 points and seven rebounds and Sean Tony Hauser chipped in with a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Fayetteville State utilized great ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 17 assists on 27 made field goals. Individually, Myles Pierre led the way for the Broncos with six assists and Tairell Fletcher also contributed with four assists of his own.

How It Happened

After playing to a 16-16 tie, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 8:34 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Simmons, to take a 21-16 lead. The Broncos then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 34-26 advantage. Fayetteville State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 34 total points.

The Trojans proceeded to tie things up at 47-47 before Fayetteville State went on a 9-0 run to seize a 56-47 lead with 9:40 to go in the contest. The Broncos kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 72-62 win. Fayetteville State got out on the break in the period, scoring 11 fast break points.
