FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 42-32 with 3:27 left in the third quarter to defeat the Francis Marion Patriots 57-52 at home Tuesday.
Aniylah Bryant led the Broncos (5-1) with 16 points and seven steals. Morgan Graham also tacked on four points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks and Keayna McLaughlin chipped in as well with eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Bryant pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fayetteville State, grabbing 22 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 28 Francis Marion turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 35 points on the offensive end of the floor. Bryant's seven steals led the way individually for the Broncos.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-8, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 2:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Daziyahna Wilson, to take a 13-12 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 13 points close to the basket.
The Broncos could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 29-19.
Francis Marion continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-27 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 15-0 run, punctuated by a three from Wilson, to tie things up at 42 with three seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Fayetteville State took advantage of nine Francis Marion turnovers in the quarter, scoring 14 points off of takeaways.
Francis Marion then snagged a 52-50 advantage before Fayetteville State responded by going on a 7-0 run to seize a 57-52 lead with eight seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Fayetteville State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 15 points in the paint.
