Fayetteville State scores 30 points off of turnovers in 89-64 win over Barton

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team scored 30 points off of turnovers on the way to an 89-64 victory against the Barton Bulldogs at home Monday.

The Broncos (4-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 23 points and two steals. Talia Trotter tacked on 14 points, six assists and three steals and Morgan Graham added eight points and three blocks.

Led by Raniyah Hocutt's five offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 19 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 22 Barton turnovers while committing 19. Those takeaways turned into 30 points on the offensive end of the floor. Keayna McLaughlin led the way individually for the Broncos with four steals.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 13-12 advantage, Fayetteville State went on a 9-0 run with 3:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Laila Harris, to increase its lead to 22-12. The Broncos then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 25-15 advantage. Fayetteville State capitalized on five Barton turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

Barton rallied to take a 32-31 lead before Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run starting at the 1:34 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Bryant, to take a 36-32 lead. The Broncos proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 40-35 advantage heading into halftime. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Fayetteville State wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 18-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bryant, to expand its lead further to 58-35 with 5:43 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Broncos added nine points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 70-38 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 30 points in the paint.

Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Alivia Evans' layup, to grow the lead to 78-43 with 6:02 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 89-64 win. Fayetteville State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
