Women’s Basketball Opens New Year with CIAA Action at Lincoln University

Lincoln University, PA – Fayetteville State women's basketball will return to action for its first game of the 2023 year with a road game at Lincoln University (PA). The cross-divisional Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matchup will tip at 5:30 pm in the Lions' Manuel Rivero Gymnasium on Thursday, January 5th. It has been two weeks and three days (17 days total) since both teams played.
 
Lincoln University is 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA. Kania Pollock and Anyssa Fields led the Lions with 16.5 points and 15.6 points, respectively. LUPA is averaging 72.2 points (3.2 better than its opponents) and has a 7.9 rebounding advantage.
 
FSU is currently 7-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play behind Aniylah Bryant's 12.9 points per game and London Thompson's 7.5 rebounds per game. The Broncos are outscoring opponents by a 2.4 scoring margin and 59.7 points per game. FSU is scoring 19.4 points off turnovers from its opponent's 19.8 turnover average.

Kania Pollock and Anyssa Fields combined for 44 points in Lincoln's 79-71 victory over Johnson C. Smith University (4-7 overall, 0-2 CIAA) in Charlotte, NC. The Lions scored 23 points with second-chance opportunities after out-rebounding JCSU 48-41. With an 11-3 run and a 14-point advantage in the top half of the fourth quarter, Lincoln (Pa.) made 8-of-12 free throws to hold on to the victory.
 
Fayetteville State had four players score in double figures to defeat Elizabeth City State 75-63. Led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 13 points, Morgan Graham added 12 points and Amina Miles chipped in with 11 points. FSU outrebounded the Vikings 38-34 and scored 29 points from ECSU's 23 turnovers.
 
Last Time against Lincoln University
On January 31, 2022, Fayetteville State defeated LUPA 80-73 inside Capel Arena. The Broncos improve to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in the conference standings. The Lions fall to 14-6 and 7-3.
 
Rasheka Simmons improved her career-best in scoring with a game-high 27 points. Keayna McLaughlin also had a personal best of 19 points and Aniylah Bryant contributed 16 points.
 
Bryanna Brown led Lincoln (Pa.) with 20 points, making 4-of-7 three-pointers.  She gave the Lions a two-point lead (62-60) with 5:36 remaining in the game.
 
With the game sitting tied (63-63) with 4:33 left, Bryant netted a three-ball and Simmons tipped in her own missed shot for a 68-63 lead. In the final minute and sixteen seconds, Fayetteville State made 12-of-14 free throws to secure the victory.

Fayetteville State will stay on the road in CIAA cross-divisional play with a match-up against Virginia Union on Saturday in Richmond, Virginia at 2 pm.
 
Lincoln University will host Saint Augustine's on Saturday.
