Men’s Basketball Returns to CIAA Play with Cross Division Slate

Lincoln University, PA – Fayetteville State men's basketball closed the 2022 calendar year with a 64-71 loss to Newberry. The Broncos will open 2023 play with a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross-divisional slate on the road against Lincoln (Pa.), Virginia Union, and Bowie State.
 
The Broncos (7-8 overall and 2-1 in CIAA play) will start the lineup at Lincoln University (Pa.) in the Manuel Rivero Gymnasium on Thursday, January 5 at 7:30 pm.
 
Lincoln University, who is 6-8 overall, is 1-2 against the CIAA Southern division. Korey Williams and Bakir Cleveland are the top scorers for the Lions. Williams averages 17.7 points per game while Cleveland scores 10.8. The Lions have a 1.5-scoring margin advantage over its opponents thus far with a 72.2-scoring average. LUPA averages 13.6 turnovers compared to 18.4 by its adversaries and 8.9 steals per game. Those turnovers have led to 20.8 points off turnovers.
 
Three Broncos are averaging double-digits in scoring. Cress Worthy leads with 14.2 points and Tyler Foster follows at 13 per game. Kaleb Coleman makes 10.5 points. The three have played in all 15 games this season. FSU averages 63.5 points per game and 7.9 three-pointers a game.

Last Time Out
Korey Williams scored a game-high 28 points to lead Lincoln past Johnson C. Smith 65-53 on December 19. The Lions shot 46% (23-50) from the floor and outrebounded the Golden Bulls 34-29. Lincoln led 37-18 at halftime and by as much as 22 (40-18) with a three-pointer by Williams at the start of the second half. Korey Williams made 5-of-9 threes and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
 
Cress Worthy and Tyler Foster combined to score 41 total points in Fayetteville State's 71-64 loss to
Newberry on December 31. Worthy scored 26 and Foster tacked on 15 points. FSU fell behind 18-9 after the opening tip but took a three-point (27-24) lead with 1:54 left in the first half. After a 29-29 tie with 14 seconds left, Newberry went into the locker room with a 31-29 halftime lead. Newberry kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 64-53 advantage. Newberry responded to a 7-0 FSU lead and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way.
 
Last Time against Lincoln University
The Broncos (14-6 overall) defeated Lincoln (Pa.) 59-52 in Capel Arena to improve to 9-1 in conference play. The Lions (14-6 overall) are now 7-3 in the CIAA.
 
Cress Worthy had the hot hand in the game with 22 points. Koraan Clemonts added a dozen points while Jalen Seegars led the team with nine rebounds and nine points.
 
Bakir Cleveland led Lincoln (Pa.) with 15 points while Alex Nunnally grabbed ten rebounds
 
Lincoln led the majority of the first half until the Broncos closed it out with an 11-0 run in the final four minutes for a 29-21 lead going into the locker rooms.
 
Fayetteville State would lead by as many as ten (47-37) until Lincoln (Pa.) climbed within four (55-51) with four minutes left in the game. Clemonts hit back-to-back jumpers to push the lead back to eight (59-51) with a minute left. The Broncos scored 11 points off 15 turnovers.
 
Up Next
Fayetteville State will travel down to Richmond, Virginia for a rematch against Virginia Union on Saturday, January 7th. The cross-divisional schedule will end on January 9 at Bowie State.
 
Lincoln University will host Saint Augustine's on Saturday.
