SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: Virginia Union comes to town with an undefeated 3-0 record and on the heels of a 42-6 victory over Livingstone College in their CIAA opener. The Panthers have one of the top offenses in the conference with a league-high 23 touchdowns over their first three contests. They lead the CIAA in points per game (54.7) and rush yards per game (286.3), along with totaling the second most yards per game (441.0). On the defensive side of the ball, VUU has allowed just six touchdowns all season, the second fewest in the conference behind Fayetteville State, and are holding opponents to 306.0 yards per game.
ALL-CIAA PRESEASON PLAYERS: The Broncos had four players this year named to the All-CIAA Preseason team. Second-year transfer quarterback
K'Hari Lane earned the honor along with kicker
Elton Andrew on the special teams' unit. A pair of defensive players in junior defensive end
Devin Cowan and graduate student cornerback
Brandon Barnes-Brown were also named All-CIAA Preseason players.
SHUT EM' DOWN: The Broncos formula to success over the first three weeks of the season is to shut down opposing offenses and win low-scoring games. In the season opener on 9/3, the Broncos won a 15-13 game over UNC Pembroke, their first win over the Braves in program history. FSU has the best defense in the conference entering the weekend, allowing a conference low 13.7 PPG. The Broncos have surrendered five touchdowns over three games and just two field goals. FSU has been especially stout in the second half of game, holding Pembroke in week one and Lincoln in week three without a second-half score.
UNDER CENTER: Three quarterbacks have already seen the field for the Broncos over the first three weeks of the season. All-CIAA Preseason QB
K'Hari Lane took all the snaps in week one against Pembroke but was sidelined late in the second quarter of week two's game against Wingate due to a knee injury. RS Senior
Avery McCall played the entire second half of the game and finished 7-for-23 with 15 yards passing and 56 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Lane returned to action in week 3, but the Broncos also tested RS Freshman
Caden Davis. Davis went 0-for-2 on pass attempts and showcased his mobility with 11 carries for 49 yards.
EA, IT'S IN THE LEG: Fayetteville State's
Elton Andrew (Salemburg, NC) was named Food Lion's Special Teams Player of the Week following their conference-opening win against Lincoln University (PA), 19-7. The 2022 Preseason All-CIAA Kicker made the difference for the Broncos, kicking a flawless four-for-four from the field, aligning from 20, 21, 30, and 32 yards of distance. "My teammates and my coaches do their part day in and day out, and I'm just glad that I could do mine when I am called, said Andrew. "It isn't possible without God, my stellar holder
Jacob Young, my snapper
Malachi Cord, and my line blocking for me. "With each team only tallying a touchdown each, Andrew, a Deputy Group Commander of the AFROTC Detachment 607, added the most crucial points for FSU within the second half with three of his four field goals.
COWAN THE CRUSHER: Junior defensive end
Devin Cowan has also been recognized with a weekly award this season, named CIAA defensive player of the week following the week two game against Wingate. The UNC Prembroke transfer is his in second season with the Broncos and leads the team this year with 3.0 sacks and 17.0 total tackles. He has also forced one of the two fumbles this year for FSU. His defensive numbers this year are well on track to passing his 2021 totals of 3.5 sacks and 29 total tackles.
CHASING A CHAMPIONSHIP: The Broncos have found themselves in the CIAA Championship game each of the last three season, but a still looking to win their first title under Head Coach Richard Hayes. The only loss to a conference opponent in the last calendar year was to Bowie State in the 2021 championship game. FSU is on a run of undefeated conference play in the regular season dating back to October 26 of 2019, when they dropped a game to St. Augustine's 23-21 at home. Since that loss, FSU is 10-0 against CIAA opponents in the regular season.
