Fayetteville State Cross Country Steps up Competition at NC State Adidas Challenge

Cary, NC – The Fayetteville State cross country program traveled to the Wake-Med Soccer Park in Cary, NC over the weekend to compete against Division I and D-II institutions in NC State's Adidas XC Challenge. For the second consecutive time this season, the Broncos swept the Division II field with an eighth-place finish for the men (244 points) and a tenth-place ranking for the women (276 points).
 
Hillary Toroith set the pace for the Broncos as the first Division II runner to finish the course. He finished 40th out of 123 runners and scored 24 points with a time of 19:06 in the 6K race. Derrick Kipchumba finished 23.5 seconds behind his teammate for 30 points in a time of 19:29.5, Kipchumba ranked 52nd overall. Abel Mengich completed the course in 21:05.2 for 48 points.
 
Host NC State won the meet with 20 points while Charleston Southern finished second with 48.  Fayetteville State, who ran an average beat out DI NC Central and ahead of D-II Barton, Shaw, and Johnson C. Smith.
 
Freshman Nia Gibson was the lead runner for the Bronco women with 51 points and a 5K time of 21:38.4. She ranked 64 out of 105 runners. Senior Mercy Chemutai scored 52 points in 21:46.2. Aaliyah Saunders racked up 55 points in a time of 22 minutes and 28.3 seconds.
 
FSU, who had an average 5K time of 22:18, finished ahead of Winston-Salem State (11th, 22:49 average), Shaw (25:04 average), and Johnson C. Smith (25:01). NC State completed the sweep with the men's and women's title.
 
Fayetteville State will travel to Greensboro next Saturday (September 24th) to compete in the 38th Greensboro XC Invitational at the Pleasant Garden Park.
