FSU Kicks Off CIAA Conference Play With Road Game at Lincoln University

LAST TIME OUT

Fayetteville State (1-1) hosted Wingate (2-0) at Nick Jeralds Stadium and kicked off in a thunderstorm that caused a delay to game action only three minutes into the first quarter. After about an hour of stoppage, Wingate broke out to a 21-0 lead and held FSU without a point until an Elton Andrew field goal in the final minute of the fourth quarter capped the score at 21-3.

"Guys were soaking wet coming off the field, but we tried not to harp on it because they were in the same situation we were," said Head Coach Richard Hayes. It's a situation where you have to continue to play regardless of the conditions."

Avery McCall took the most snaps as quarterback in his Broncos career, going 7-for-23 in pass attempts and rushing for 56 yards on 11 carries. FSU showed out well on the defensive side of the football, creating three turnovers while having three players with at least eight tackles, led by Khalid Martin who had ten.

The loss dropped the Broncos to 1-1 on the season and 0-8 all-time against Wingate.

COWAN THE CRUSHER

Junior Defensive End Devin Cowan was a game wrecker against Wingate, coming up with the only sack for FSU and also forcing a fumble. The All-CIAA preseason selection has been the leader on the Broncos' defensive line with 2.0 sacks, 4.0 tackles for loss, and 13 total tackles. He is well on pace to surpass his 2021 totals of 3.5 sacks, 29 total tackles, and 10 tackles for a loss.

"He's the leader of the group right now and he's the most experienced guy we have out there, said Hayes. He plays with a lot of energy and passion and the guys really feed off of his energy starting from pregame.

HEAD-TO-HEAD HISTORY VS. LINCOLN UNIVERSITY

The Broncos have enjoyed much success in the all-time head-to-head matchups against Lincoln University, going 6-0 since 2008. FSU took last year's game at Nick Jeralds Stadium by a 46-9 final and were led by quarterback K'Hari Lane who threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns, including a 61-yard strike to WR Brian Gentry

"I'm looking for us to complete for 60 minutes," said Hayes. "I thought last week we went for about 45 minutes and then once that fourth quarter hit we kind of wore down. Lincoln has a lot of different moving parts and they are much different and a much better football team."

This is the first time FSU goes on the road to Lincoln, PA since the 2018 season, when they grabbed a convincing 32-0 shutout victory over the Lions.
