Broncos drop 3-1 match to Converse

FLORENCE, SC --The Fayetteville State volleyball team fell to the Converse Valkyries 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 17-25, 18-25) Saturday at Smith University Center in Florence, South Carolina at the final day of the Francis Marion Volleyball Invitational.

The non-conference loss dropped Fayetteville State to 1-7 overall on the season as the Broncos will now shift its preparation towards conference play next Thursday (September 15).

The Broncos offense has been paced by Bailey Robinson thus far in the season. Robinson finished with 12 kills on the day and Xiamana Spikes had 10 while hitting .364.

Bailey currently leads the teams with a total of 73 kills in 26 sets played (2.81 per set) and has a hitting percentage of .164 with 195 total attacks.

Defensively, FSU had two players reach double figures in digs as Jordan Johnson had 16 and Jaida Bynum had 10.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Broncos fell in a close first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied 11 times and had eight lead changes.

SET 2 | Fayetteville State responded to pick up a 25-20 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Broncos never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Broncos took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Converse responded to win set number three, putting Fayetteville State in a two sets to one hole. The Broncos fell in a tough set 25-17. Fayetteville State trailed by as many as eight points as Converse grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up two times before the Valkyries took over the lead.

SET 4 | Fayetteville State then lost the fourth set 25-18 to finish off the match. The Broncos trailed by as many as eight points as Converse grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 and Fayetteville State wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up four times before the Valkyries took over.

What's Next
Fayetteville State will travel to Winston-Salem, NC on Thursday, September 15 to open conference play against the Rams at 6 pm in the Winston-Salem State Whitaker Gymnasium.
