SCOUTING THE BEARS: Shaw travels to FSU with a 3-5 overall record and are coming off a win last Saturday against Livingstone (28-14). The Bears rank fourth in the conference in rushing and are led by running back Andre Brandon Jr., averaging 66.9 rushing yards per game with four touchdowns. Under center, starting QB Christian Peters is completing 48.2% of passes with 903 total yards and 6 TD. On the defensive side, Shaw has struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks, with the third fewest sacks in the conference (9), 4.0 coming from junior defen- sive end Brian Patterson. Grad student defensive back Jaleen Scroggins leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss.
ALL-CIAA PRESEASON PLAYERS: The Broncos had four players this year named to the All-CIAA Presea- son team. Second-year transfer quarterback
K'Hari Lane earned the honor along with kicker
Elton Andrew on the special teams unit. A pair of defensive players in junior defensive end
Devin Cowan and graduate student corner- back
Brandon Barnes-Brown were also named All-CIAA Preseason players. Barnes-Brown will also participate in the 2023 Reese's Senior Bowl on February 4th, 2023.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: The Broncos had one of the lower scoring offenses in the CIAA over the first five weeks of the season, ranked 10th in scoring across the conference. Over the last three games they have complet- ley bucked the trend, scoring a combined 119 points against St. Augustine's, Livingstone and Johnson C. Smith. The huge scoring metrics have jumped FSU from a bottom three offense, based on PPG, to the fifth best scoring offense in the conference at 24.6 PPG.
UNDER CENTER: The Broncos have deployed a quarterback-by-committee strategy since the October 8th game vs. St. Augustine's.
K'Hari Lane, who served as the primary starting QB in 2021, is now splitting snaps with freshmen
Demari Daniels and Cadon Davis. Daniels has been the most efficient of the trio, completing 56.5% of his passes and throwing for 5 touchdowns over three games, including a 3 TD performance vs. St. Augustine's.
BARRY ELITE: Wide receiver Barry Elliot is setting FSU records in his first year with the program as a grad transfer from Charleston West Virginia. He has scored at least one touchdown in four of FSU's last five games, and wracked up a total of six touchdowns over the last three games (5 receiving, 1 rushing). His big game of the sea- son came at home vs. St. Augustine's on 10/8, scoring 3 TD through the air on 141 yards receiving. His 7 receiving touchdowns in 2022 tie him with WR Tyeous Sharpe's season total from 2021, while his 8 total TD are the most by a Bronco since Stevie Green's 14 rushing scores in 2019.
ALL IN THE LEG: One of the strengths for FSU this season has been the consistency of place kicker
Elton Andrew and punter
Jacob Young. Andrew's nine field goals lead the CIAA, and the redshirt senior is now just two FG shy of 30 for his career. He is four back from tieing his career-best 13 field goals in 2021. Young is setting career-high marks in his senior season, averaging a single-season best 41.1 yards per punt, and booted an all-time best 64-yard punt vs. UNC Pembroke earlier this season. He has also shattered a new career record with 11 punts of 50 or more yards this season.
TWO-MAN WRECKING CREW: Defensive ends
Devin Cowan and
Cameron Merrell have led an FSU defense tied with Virginia Union for the most sacks (29) and fewest PPG (12.7) allowed in the CIAA. Cowan's 12.5 TFL leads the team while Merrell's 8.0 sacks are tops for the Broncos. FSU's 31 sacks have already surpassed the 2021 season total of 30 and are the most by any FSU defensive unit since the 2009 season (46).
HENRY'S HOUSE: RB Elijah Henry is coming off a big game last week at JCS. He totaled a season-high 120 all-purpose yards and was heavily utilized in the passing game with 92 receiving yards and a TD reception.
