Charlotte, NC –Fayetteville State cross country traveled to Charlotte, NC to compete in Queens University's Royal XC Challenge at the McAlpine Park. The Bronco women finished third overall in the 5-kilometer behind Ave Maria and West Georgia. The men topped at 11
th place in the 8K race.
Fayetteville State accumulated 167 points on the Blue course with five of seven runners scoring. Freshman
Repline Cheptoo led the effort with a time of 19:57.8 and ten points. Her average mile was 6:25.5.
Mercy Chemutai finished with 28 points after running 21:00.6 with a 6:45.7 average.
Brenda Cheboi was on Mercy's heels, just three seconds behind at 21:03.4.
Nia Gibson scored 39 points with a 21:22.7 race.
Aaliyah Saunders rounded out the scoring with 61 points with a course time of 22:20.2.
The Broncos, who had a combined 5K time of 1:45:44 finished ahead of CIAA opponents: Winston-Salem State (12
th – 1:57:46), St. Augustine's (13
th – 1:59:11), Shaw (16
th – 2:01:15), Johnson C. Smith (21
st – 2:03:04, Livingstone (23
rd – 2:07:56), and Claflin (24
th – 2:11:06). A total of 25 schools participated in the race which made for 199 runners.
The FSU men's program, although 11
th overall, finished with an average time of 28:30 (2:22:30 total time) and before six other conference teams. Twenty-seven programs were in the men's 8K race.
Hilary Toroitich finished second in the Blue Race with a field of 223 competitors to account for two of the Broncos' points.
Derrick Kipchumba scored 17 points with his 18
th place finish in a time of 26:59.2.
Brian Kiptanui ran a time of 28:21 for 47 points.
Fayetteville State will compete in the Livingstone Invitational on October 18 before heading to the CIAA Championships on October 27
th.
