Comeback Effort Not Enough in FSU’s 61-58 Loss to Davis & Elkins

Elkins, WV (January 1, 2022) – Fayetteville State women's basketball came close to celebrating a victory on New Year's Day, but the comeback effort went cold in a 61-58 loss to Davis & Elkins in West Virginia.
 
The Broncos fell behind early, 16-6, after the first quarter of 2022 and managed to close the gap to three (28-25) before halftime. FSU stayed diligent in the third quarter to knot the game at 44 behind Rasheka Simmons' double-double effort of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Fayetteville State finished the game making 85% (17-20) of its free throws. In the third quarter alone, FSU was 8-for-8. Simmons went to the line the most where she was 8-of-10. Aniylah Bryant was perfect from the line making all six of her attempts. She scored a total of 15 points to go along with three steals and two assists.
 
The challenge for the game for FSU was the 25.3% (19-75) in field goals and 15% (3-20) in three-pointers.
 
Fayetteville State tied the game at 55-55 and recaptured its third one-point lead of the second half with 3:04 left in the game off a pair of Bryant's free throws. After that, the Broncos missed all seven of its field goals attempts and only scored two free throws with 49 seconds left.
 
Keayna McLaughlin also finished in double figures with 12 points.
 
Davis & Elkins' Dream Cherry led all scorers with 17 points. Marissa Berlin and Peyton Mohler, each, finished with double-doubles. Berlin had 14 points with 11 boards and Mohler also chipped in 14 points along with 10 rebounds. Allie Taylor ended up with 10 points in the victory.
