Murfreesboro, NC – Fayetteville State Volleyball traveled to Murfreesboro, NC to only stay for a spell. The Broncos swept through Chowan University 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20 to improve its overall record to 4-1 on the season. Junior
Casandra Watson collected a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs in the winning effort.
The Broncos on a whole had a total of 41 kills for the night and three service aces. CIAA Offensive Player of the Week
Kalee Vanderhorst chipped in eight kills while
Alexia Bryant added seven. CIAA Setter of the Week
Jaida Bynum put up a team-high 17 assists.
Kyra Webb followed with 12 of her own. Defensive Specialist
Jasmine Jacinto led FSU with 23 digs.
Chowan, who drops to 3-6 overall, was led by Anixa Rosa-Martinez's game-high 15 kills and three service aces.
FSU broke a 15-all tie in the first set with a 4-0 run led by two kills from Watson and two Hawk attack errors. The next three Bronco points came from three more Chowan errors. After
Alexia Bryant laid down a kill to set the score at 23-20, blocks by Vanderhorst and
Anjola Thomas and Web and Thomas ended the set at 25-21.
The second set remained close until the 23-all score. A Chowan attack error spotted FSU with match-point and a kill by
Jasmine Jacinto, her fourth of the season, locked the game away at 25-23.
In the final set, Fayetteville State recovered from a 0-3 start and held a slight edge until the 20-19 score. A kill by Vanderhorst and Bryant spotted the Broncos by two and an attack error by the Hawks set up a three-point lead. After a Chowan kill (23-20), Watson nailed a signature kill for match-point and Thomas killed behind her for the victory.
Fayetteville State will host UNC Pembroke in Capel Arena on Friday at 6 pm for its home-opener. Fans are mandated to wear masks and sit on the second and third levels of the concourse.
