Ettrick, VA (December 18, 2021) – After a two-game win-streak and conference-opening victory over Shaw University, Fayetteville State dropped it's first CIAA loss in Ettrick, VA to the 6-5 (overall) Trojans of Virginia State University. The loss pits FSU with a 4-5 record and 1-1 conference standing. VSU is now 1-0 in the CIAA.
Rasheka Simmons (a junior from Reynolds, GA) led the Broncos' game with a season-high 19 points followed by
Aniylah Bryant (sophomore - Havelock, NC), who chipped in ten. Simmons made most of her points from the charity stripe, making 13-of-14.
After trailing 17-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Broncos had a rough second after only scoring six points before the half to fall behind 31-18. FSU regained composure after intermission to score 22 points to the Trojans' 16 and head into the final round down by seven (47-40). The Broncos had 11 points from VSU's turnovers and ten second-chance tip-ins. Twelve of FSU's points in the quarter were in the paint.
Fayetteville State was 2-of-10 from the field in the second quarter and finished the game making 30.9% (17-55) of its shots. The Broncos went to the free-throw line 13 times in the third quarter to make over 76% (10-13). FSU won the battle on the boards (41-35) which led to 18 second-chance points over VSU's eight. Virginia State made 42% (21-50) of their shots with six three-pointers.
Three VSU Trojans scored double-figures with Kaaliya Williams leading the way with 17 points. Sommer Blakemore and J'Aunna Robinson each finished with 13 points.
Fayetteville State will travel to Elizabeth City State on Monday, December 20 for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
