Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State University is accustomed to having a tough game against Winston-Salem State in the Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. The Broncos defeated the Rams 10-3 today to remain undefeated in conference play at 7-0 and improved to 8-1 overall. The victory is the first since October 11, 2003. Since 1993, FSU is 3-9-1 against WSSU.
Fayetteville State held the Rams to 164 yards of total offense, which breaks down to 76 yards rushing and 88 yards passing. The Broncos played a conservative game with an almost balanced attack of 124 yards on the ground and 187 in the air.
Quarterback K'hari Lane was 14-of-21 in passing and
Donshel Jetton rushed 19 times for 93 yards.
Braxton Knotts caught two passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. His scoring route was 46 yards with 13:13 left in the second half.
Elton Andrew kicked a 19-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead at the second half's 5:43 mark.
Winston-Salem State (3-6 overall, 3-4 CIAA) kept the game interesting in the fourth quarter. The Rams kicked a 22-yard field goal after the start of the quarter (14:51) to cap a 7-play drive that covered 45 yards.
The Broncos missed a 36-yard field goal on the following drive. After the Bronco defense shut down the Rams on its next drive, FSU's
Jacob Young put up a 48-yard punt that stopped rolling at the WSSU 12-yard line.
This is where things became interesting. On a 3
rd-and-11 play, FSU was flagged for a personal foul that gave them a fresh set of downs. Cameron Lewis, who finished with 12-of-30 completed passes for 84 yards, completed his longest pass of the game when he connected with El-Joshua Allen to the FSU 47-yard line. Lewis secured another first down on a three-yard rush. At 2
nd-and-6, Lewis had three incomplete passes for a turnover on downs.
Brandon Barnes-Brown and
Elvin De La Rosa had a pass deflection within the series.
On the pursuing FSU drive, Deiontae Jones forced a Bronco fumble and Jayle Gulatte recovered the ball at the FSU-48 with a minute left in the game.
Down by seven, WSSU was out of timeouts and had 48 yards to cover to tie the game or go-for-two for the victory. Facing 4
th-and-5, the Bronco secondary had every receiver on lock. Lewis side-stepped two defensive linemen and rushed 16 yards for a first down at the Broncos' 27-yard line. On the next play, Lewis found Nehem Williams for 11 yards at the 16-yard line.
With time fleeting, Lewis dumped another pass to Antjuan Collins which resulted in a loss of a yard at the expiration of the game.
Fayetteville State will travel to Salem, Virginia to take on Bowie State in the CIAA Championship Game. Kick-off is slated for 1:06 p.m.
