FSU Broncos Opens Basketball Season with 57-56 Overtime Victory Over Shepherd

Shepherdstown, WV – Fayetteville State University opened its 2021-22 men's basketball season with a 57-56 overtime victory over Shepherd University in the Dave Russell Conference Challenge in Shepherdstown West Virginia. Preseason All-CIAA Jalen Seegars led the game with 20 as Darian Dixon chipped in 15 and Cress Worthy with 11.

The Broncos trailed by three (22-19) at the half and by as many as seven (45-38) with about four minutes left in regulation. A layup by Worthy followed by a pair of free throws cut the deficit by three within a two-minute dry spell.

Seegars tied the game at 45 with a three-ball from Worthy's assist with 2:52 left.

Shepherd's Kyle Daggett, who led the team with 12 points dunked a few seconds left for the advantage.

As time ticked away in regulation, Seegars' jumper knotted the game, sending it to overtime. In the extra period, Seegars opened the scoring with three followed by Zion Cousins' dunk.  Cousins led the Broncos in rebounds with 9 and finished with 6 points.

Daggett hit a three to set the score at 57-55 with 1:53 left. After a Shepherd timeout at the 29-second mark, Jarrod Robinson split a pair of free throws that could have tied the game for Shepherd. Daggett pulled down the offensive board, but another missed shot attempt became a defensive rebound for FSU.

A latter steal by Worthy secured FSU's first victory of the season.

Fayetteville State will play Mercyhurst (1-0 overall) tomorrow at 4:30 pm. A live stream of the game can be viewed at https://psacsportsdigitalnetwork.com/shepherdrams/?B=323730.
