FSU Broncos Score High Academic Marks During Pandemic

Fayetteville State University athletics closed out the 2020 Spring academic semester with a praise equivalent to the four-of-seven Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships won during this 2019-20 athletic season.

With the emotional frustration of no team activities or access to facilities, vacating campus, and converting to online classes for social distancing due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Fayetteville State student-athletes achieved a cumulative Spring grade point average of 3.04. Eight programs out of 12 sponsored sports and cheerleading finished with a 3.0 or better grade point average.

"The resilience of our Broncos in the classroom this past semester connects to the success that was achieved on the field," said Athletics Director Anthony Bennett. "This success helped the department achieve a cumulative 3.0 average for the year."

The Bronco men's cross-country team recorded the highest mark of a 3.43 GPA for the semester.

"These young men are examples of why I stay in the business of coaching," said men's coach Inez Turner. "Many ran for the first time in their lives. Their true spirit carried them both academically and athletically. They have achieved the program's goal and that of the athletics department. I am proud to be their coach."

The 2020 CIAA women's basketball champions finished with a Spring mark of 3.33.

"The players have done an amazing job academically while balancing their sport and despite a pandemic," stated Head Women's Basketball Coach Serena King-Coleman. "They have proven to be champions on and off the court; I am very proud of this team and all of their efforts and accomplishments."

The women's cross country and indoor track & field champions achieved a 3.13 and 3.03, respectively.

Eight student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester and 90 attained a 3.0 or better.
