Fayetteville, NC (March 7, 2020) – Fayetteville State Softball lost a 5-0 and 5-1 non-conference twinbill to UNC Pembroke at its home field Lamon Street Park Saturday to fall to 5-9 on the season.
In the first game, 13-9 overall UNC Pembroke's Malerie Leviner (7-2) struck out 17-of-21 Broncos while the Braves did not allow any hits with three fly outs and one ground out. FSU's
Braynka Brown (3-3) suffered the loss in the circle with all seven innings pitched and 32 batters faced.
Fayetteville State scored the first run of the final game in the first inning when
M'Smrya Seward scored off a
Mikayla Jackson sacrifice bunt. Seward reached base with a double to left center and stole third base.
Carson Powell hit a Braves three-run homer to capture the lead in the second inning. UNCP increased the lead to 4-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly. The fifth run was scored in the fourth off an errant throw.
Seward and
Cameron McCutchen each stole two bases.
Ashlyn Zook (3-3) faced 29 batters in the seven innings, giving up six hits.
Fayetteville State will return to action next week in the CIAA cross divisional roundup in Elizabeth City, NC.
