Raleigh, NC – Fayetteville men's basketball had a typical slow start in its CIAA Southern Division showdown at Saint Augustine's, but the Broncos overcame a 32-31 halftime deficit to hold on to a 78-72 victory in SAU's Emory Gymnasium.
Jalen Seegars (Greensboro, NC) led with 17 points and eight-rebound game-highs to seal the victory with Denzel Hosch (Shelby, NC) shooting a perfect 4-of-4 three-pointers for 16 points.
Darian Dixon (Bowie, MD) had a dozen points and
Jalen Spicer (Greensboro) finished with 11.
Fayetteville State (17-5 overall; 6-5 CIAA) trailed by nine (22-13) with 9:12 left in the first half but the Broncos chipped away to capture a one-point lead (29-28) from Hosch's first three-pointer with 2:43 left.
A couple baskets by Gary Jefferson helped the Falcons regain a 32-31 halftime edge.
Following intermission, Fayetteville State seized a 55-45 lead from a 11-2 run with nine minutes left and extended the lead to 17 (74-57) with two minutes to go. A pair of free throws by Seegars with less than a minute on the clock made for smooth sailing with a 77-60 advantage.
Saint Augustine's valiant barrage of scoring closed the final score at 78-72 at the end of regulation.
Seegars had 15 points in the final half along with Hosch's 13 points. Fayetteville State made 20-of-25 free throws and sank 8-of-11 three-pointers. The Broncos shot a better 51.0% (25-49) in field goals to the Falcons 48.3% (28-58).
Miguel Brown commanded 16 points for Saint Augustine's and Nilous Hodge pumped in 14. SAU frequented the free throw line 16 times with nine made attempts.
