Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State had a lot to cheer about in Capel Arena as the Broncos (9-7 overall) demolished the D2SIDA Atlantic Region No. 3 Bowie State (14-2 overall) 74-47 in a non-conference rematch game.
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, NC) scored a game-high 18 with assistance from
Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) and
Aminata Johnson (Durham, NC) who scored 13 points each.
London Thompson (Lumberton, NC) had a game-high 14 rebounds along with seven points.
Fayetteville State jumped out to a tremendous 18-5 lead after the first quarter and held a 43-23 lead at halftime. The first half lead was extended to 25 (43-18) with 2:15 left in the half. At the break, Hyman led with 11 points and Johnson had ten.
Bowie State managed to pull within 13 (48-35) midway through the third quarter but a 9-0 run by the Broncos crushed the Bulldogs chance at any momentum as FSU ended the quarter with a 20-point cushion (57-37).
It was cruise control for the remainder of the game.
Fayetteville State shot 54.7 percent (29-of-54) from the floor while Bowie State struggled at 28.6 percent (16-of-56). FSU scored 46 points in the paint, had 26 points off turnovers and 16 fast break points. Bowie State only had 20 in the paint and 15 off of turnovers.
Bowie State's Kyaja Williams and Drew Calhoun led the team in scoring with 12 points each. Talanya Hutton added nine points and Dynaisha Christian contributed seven points. Hutton and Christian were Bowie State's rebound leaders with seven apiece.
Fayetteville State will have a week to get adjusted with Spring semester classes before hosting Benedict College on Saturday (Jan. 18) at 2 p.m.
