Fayetteville, NC – Five Broncos scored double-digits with
Darian Dixon and
Denzell Hosch scoring 20 each as Fayetteville State defeated Shaw 85-77 in Capel Arena. The CIAA Southern Division victory improves FSU's overall record to 14-3, 5-3 in the conference, and 3-1 in the division.
Hosch, a senior from Shelby, NC, knocked down three three-pointers and went a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line for a 20-point performance. Junior forward
Darian Dixon (Bowie, MD) put up five made field goals in the paint with ten made free throws from 12 attempts for his 20.
Mark Burton (Tokyo, Japan) contributed a dozen points while
Jalen Seegars (Greensboro, NC) added 11 and
Will Brown (Gresham, SC) ten.
The Broncos to quick advantage of its size in the first half scoring 18 points in the paint to the Bears two and out-rebounded Shaw 23-16 for a 33-26 lead.
Within the first four minutes of the second half, Shaw (4-11 overall 1-8 CIAA) fell further behind by 18 (46-28) after a dunk by Seegars completed a 13-2 run with 16:52 left in the game.
Fayetteville State's largest lead of 21 points [for the second time] (64-43) with 10:42 left put the Broncos at ease and allowed the Bears to cut the lead down to five (69-64) after a 20-5 run with 5:26 left.
Following a wake-up call, FSU pushed the lead back to double-digits until 13 seconds left in the game.
DeVaughn Kelsie led the Bears with a game-high 36 points after securing 8-of-12 three-pointers, three field goals and six free throws. Greyson Kelley added 23 points with 15-of-16 free throws and four field goals.
The Broncos controlled the boards the entire game with 43 rebounds to the Bears 27.
Fayetteville State will remain home on Monday (January 13) night with a non-conference 7:30 game against Bowie State University.
