Bowie, Md. – Fayetteville State is tied for third place with Winston-Salem State after the first day of competition at the CIAA Track & Field Championships on the campus of Bowie State University in Bowie, Md.
The two rival schools scored 22 points to trail leader Virginia State (40 points) and Johnson C. Smith (25 points). Defending champs Saint Augustine's is eighth overall with 6 points.
Shennare Williams leads the way for the Broncos with eight points from a silver-medal finish in the long jump finals with a leap of 5.55 meters on her sixth attempt.
Tawana Allen scored two points at seventh with a 5.36m jump on her second leap.
Bridgette Nathan finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 28.67 meters.
Nelly Kandie finished fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:04.06.
Aleena Cruz and
Carisha Leonard ran in different heats and finished 16 hundredths of a second apart. Cruz crossed for sixth place in a time of 5:15.03. Leonard was seventh in 5:15.19.
Several Broncos are positioned well after prelims to improve on its third-place finish at Indoor Championships.
Expect fireworks during the final day of competition tomorrow with teams battling for a podium position. In addition to the heat on the track, the forecast is calling for 100% chance of rain with possible thunder. In competition stops, Monday will be the make-up date.
