FSU Broncos Sweep St. Augustine’s 8-2 and 4-3 in Divisional Softball Action

Fayetteville, N.C. -- Fayetteville State University has a firm hold on the CIAA Southern Division No. 4 seed after defeating Saint Augustine's 8-2 and 4-3 today at the Lamon Street Park in Fayetteville, N.C. The Broncos will travel to Salisbury, N.C. on Wednesday, April 24th for its final regular-season doubleheader. Between games, Alexandria White (Fayetteville, N.C.) was recognized as a senior prior to her last home game as a Bronco.

FSU (7-23 overall, 7-9 CIAA) currently has the same 4-6 divisional record with the Falcons (5-16, 5-11 CIAA) but holds the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage with the sweep. Saint Augustine's will travel to Winston-Salem State on Friday, April 26 to face the 26-8 (12-2) Rams. The Blue Bears are currently 0-16 in conference play.

Nicole Brown led the first game of the doubleheader with 3 hits, 1 RBI, and 1 run. Alex White gave support with 2 hits and 3 RBI. In the second game, Grace Vincent, Madison Mendoza, and Cheyene Ingram all had a hit.

Saint Augustine's Haley Sessoms, who batted second in the lineup, opened today's action with a homerun over the center field fence.

Fayetteville State responded in the second inning with four runs. Neah Stevens scored the first run on an error by the third baseman. Nicole Brown had the second score when Cheyene Ingram grounded out to the pitcher. Alexandria White hit a single into left center for a two-run RBI and a 4-1 lead over the St. Augustine's.

In the third inning, FSU extended its lead to 6-1 after an RBI single from Brown and a sacrifice ground out by Timmya Williams.

Saint Augustine's was gifted a run on a bases-loaded walk by Madison Mendoza.

Mikayla Jackson stole home for the Broncos seventh run in the fifth inning and White recorded a sacrifice ground-out to the third baseman, which allowed the final eighth run.

In the second game of the twin bill, the two teams played a tied game until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Saint Augustine's scored first on an error in the first inning and the Broncos scored on a passed ball in the second inning. Both teams scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning. The Falcons cycled through the sixth inning with three batters which led to an exciting bottom of the sixth for Fayetteville State.

Ashlyn Zook reached base on balls prior to the Saint Augustine's shuffling their defensive positions. Mikayla Jackson reached first base on an error by the short stop, who was moved from second base; but started the game at third-base. The throwing error allowed Jackson to continue to third base and Zook to cross home for the winning advantage.

The Bronco defense prevented six Falcon' batters from scoring to preserve the victory.

The fourth seed of the CIAA Southern Division advances to play in the CIAA Softball Championships next week in Salem, Va.
